Brain Awareness Week - Are you looking after your brain?

International Brain Awareness Week (BAW) is the global campaign to increase public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research. The Neuroknowledge and Perth Brain Centre  is an official partner of International Brain Awareness Week, which starts on the 12 March this year.

Studies show that more than 90% of us say that brain health is very important. Research also shows that we feel that keeping our brain healthy is important to be able to enjoy everyday life, and to be able maintain independence and a good memory as we get older. On average most people think that we should be making plans for our future brain health in our mid-thirties.

Research shows that a lifestyle that prioritises physical health and mental well-being can have a significant impact on brain health and cognitive function (such as how fast you think, how well you make decisions and how well you remember things). In particular, several key factors are known to promote good brain health and these are: Regular physical exercise, a healthy well-balanced diet, effective stress management, good sleep, mental challenge, and avoiding drugs, smoking and alcohol.
