What is ADHD ?
All parents want the best for their children and know how important it is for them to be happy and to do well at school. Research shows that between 5 to 10% of children have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The core symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity can have a severe impact on all aspects of life for the child and the whole family.
Studies also show that most children with ADHD will continue to experience problems into adulthood. Whilst ADHD seems to affect more boys and girls in childhood this seems to balance out by adulthood and just as many women are affected by men.
What causes ADHD ?
Research shows that ADHD has a very strong genetic basis. So when a child is diagnosed with ADHD there is a good chance that at least one of the parents will also have it as well. It is not clear yet exactly what causes ADHD but research indicates that there are problems with the function of key areas of the brain involved with attention and impulse-control. Brain scans that look at how the brain is working, such as QEEG, can help to localise the areas of the brain that are not working normally (which can be different from one person with ADHD to another). This important information can be used to help guide advice and to develop personalised treatment programmes.
Drug-free treatment for ADHD
In the past, treatment for ADHD was usually limited to medication. However, now it is accepted that treatment should be patient-centred and involve a range of options. There is no “one size fits all” approach, and we believe that everyone should be able to make an informed choice based upon the range of treatments now available.
